The first person I saw knitting was my great grandmother Carmelita. Knitting, or tricot, as it is referred to in Spanish and French is not a very popular art form here in Panama mainly because this is a rather warm country. There are several mountain areas where it gets chilly and cold, specifically in the province of Chiriquí, where my great grandmother was from.Since neither my mother nor grandmother knew the art, I had to learn it from a Kit I bought in a craft's store in the United States back in 1992. Since then I've knitted sweaters, afghans/throws, blankets and dog sweaters for my shih tzu dogs (pictured below).
My father used to think that I knitted as a form of therapy and later on he would say to me "you can stop now". He didn't realize I actually love creating something beautiful from a piece of yarn and two sticks. This is my shih tzu Connor in his dog sweater / dog coat. He loves it and was rather jealous when I took it from him to take the first picture. Both my shih tzu dogs are shaved down because we have a tick problem here in Panama and this allows me to control it but in the nights it gets chilly so they are happy to wear them. For pictures of my shih tzu dogs you can go to my other site Shih Tzu Magazine. |
