Sewing

SewingMy grandmother was a home education teacher, so when she retired and started spending more time at home and taking care of me, to help out my mom, she would make me do little embroidery stitches in a piece of fabric that was leftover from any of her projects.  She would also teach me the basic sewing stitches.  Later on my mom took up sewing and she made a few attempts at it.  A set of curtains, one of my school uniforms (no comments)... But it wasn't until I was in college that someone suggested I take a sewing lesson at the local Singer shop.

That's where I fell in love with sewing, or rather became obsessed with it!  They taught me how to follow sewing patterns (back then they still sold them, now you cannot find them anywhere here in Panama, I have to order them from the internet), plus the finishing techniques. After that I started buying fabric like there was no tomorrow, and I discovered those BURDA magazines (originally from Germany) that have the free patterns inside, all you have to do is trace the pattern pieces on manila paper (like brown paper bags) and then cut the fabric according to the pattern.  Sometimes you need to leave the seam allowance as well, but some patterns do include it.  I am very amazed that the sewing magazines from the USA (Butterick / McCalls) do not give the free patterns  but rather only show you the designs so you can then order the patterns via mail order.

Check out or sewing resources (tips and tutorials), whether you are a beginner or a pro.  I search for each resource manually and make sure they are valid links (not just links to e-books or more advertising).  Enjoy!
